P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) Michael Jackson Cover

Oh, hey, hi!

-I’m lucky to count Andrew Heine as one of my long-time friends. We grew up camping with each others’ families and singing in choirs together (starting way back when I was seven years old). We even had the same piano teacher as kids.

-This recording/video footage is the result of a spontaneous road-trip get-together, and is owed to the magical power of Facebook status updates. Andrew asked the internet if anyone wanted to make music, and I suggested he come down to my parents’ house for the day and we could knock something out.

-After quick plans and not-so-quick drives were made… Recording gear was set up in the dining room, and Andrew laid down an amazingly inspired improvised arrangement of Michael Jackson’s hit on my mom’s Yamaha grand piano.

-We figured there wasn’t a better time to cover an MJ song…

-We slept on it, knocked out the vocals the next morning, and mixed after lunch (or something like that). Somewhere in there, we stopped to chase a wild turkey out of the yard too. Twice.

-Then Andrew drove back home, and I hacked this video together using Final Cut for the first time ever. *Whew*

-For the gear geeks (Fish):
Stereo pair of Shure SM-81 mics in the piano. AKG C-3000 for vocals.
Aphex 107 Tubessence preamp.
Pro Tools 8.
Mighty Mac Mini

Turkey Hunt!

-While my long-time friend Andrew Heine and I were recording a soon-to-be publicized song on the central coast of CA, there came a knocking at the front door. Actually it was a wild turkey drinking out of the front bird bath/fountain thingy, but close enough. A chase ensued, and the rascal got away.

-Half an hour later, the glorified vulture was BACK! This time s/he was eating the tomatoes from their potted home on the back patio. We never could catch the damned thing, but at least we gave it enough of a fright to induce flight!

-I’m gunnin’ locally next Thanksgiving…

Mohawk War!

Oh hey, hi!

-The other day while my family was barbecuing at my sister’s family abode, my niece decided it’d be fun to mess up my hair. My nephew, who thinks my mohawk is the absolute coolest thing in the world, screamed “NOOO!” at the top of his lungs and rushed from the other side of the yard to defend my rock n roll style…

-An epic battle ensued.

-Niece messin’ it up vs. nephew standing it back up… Who will be the victor???

-Thankfully, my sister documented it all with her handy iPhone… Even if I DID have to remind her that online video doesn’t look so good in Portrait mode…

Love and hairy battles,

My First Weekend Ride on My Kawasaki KLR650.

I scored a sweet deal on a 2004 Kawasaki KLR650 last week.

-That’s a motorcycle. The fun kind. The kind you can take over rocks and muddy trails AND still ride it to the corner store to get some Pepsi.

-The previous owner had a low-speed fall in town that crunched some plastics. He rode it for a little longer as his commuter with things roughly patched up before he moved to a new area (MY area) and his commuting patterns changed.

-He didn’t feel like purdyin’ the bike up before he sold it, so he set a ridiculously low sale price just to get it out of his garage. It’s got a lot of miles on it, but this was just the deal I was hoping for. Less than HALF of its Blue Book value! Even with 33,000 miles on it, I figured I was looking at a steal!

-Two hours after he posted the ad, I’d made arrangements to take a look-see… The next day I rode it home. Hooray! I’m in the club!

The Test Ride

The Test Ride

-Pics of the bike the day I got it home are HERE on Flickr.

-Well, I added another 150 miles to the odometer today! After changing the oil/filter and cleaning the air filter and chain with my dad yesterday, I thought I’d get it out on some of the scenic routes through the CA wine country to the coast and back for a quick loop.

KLR Over Morro Bay

-The iPhone pic doesn’t quite do the scenic overlook justice, but that’s Morro Bay in CA past the ridge line. Morro Rock is barely visible just above and to the slight right of the throttle.

-Note the previous owner’s red duct tape job holding the front fender together… Don’t worry. I’ve already got black plastics on the way to replace the red cracked-and-sun-faded ones.

-First impression: She behaved like a champ! Can’t wait to add another 33,000+ miles to the odometer total.

Black wife-beaters are cool still, right?

-A moment of silence in honor of those sideburns (and that hair line)…

-Steve Paterson at http://www.StartClear.com did a great job back in the day… It was just time to move on from the 2001-era media that made up the site’s backbone. Must… Produce… New… Content!
